MODESTO – A man in a stolen vehicle faces several felony charges after causing a vehicle collision Tuesday morning.

Officer Adam Foster, a police spokesman, said at about 9:30am officers responded to northwest Modesto to take a report of a stolen Toyota Tacoma. Moments later, a sheriff deputy in the area of Carpenter Road and California Avenue spotted the truck but lost sight of it.

Foster said the truck was spotted again by an officer near Paradise Road and Yosemite Avenue. The truck fled south on Yosemite Avenue before the officer could get behind the truck.

The driver, identified as 21 year old Dustin Degetaire, ran the stop sign at Tuolumne Boulevard, causing a collision with a Volkswagen Passat. The impact caused the pickup to overturn and land on a curb.

Degetaire then exited the truck and fled on foot, according to Foster. He was captured by authorities about a block away and taken to a hospital for medical clearance. He faces charges including burglary, auto theft, hit and run, resisting and driving on a suspended license.

The occupants of the Volkswagen were also taken to a hospital. The driver suffered serious injuries but is expected to survive. A child in the car also suffered minor injuries. Foster noted that the child was properly restrained in a car safety seat.

Tuolumne Boulevard was closed for several hours as officers investigated the collision.

MODESTO – A 48 year old man was arrested Sunday after walking into a store with a weapon, police say.

The incident happened at the Target shopping center on McHenry Avenue Sunday evening. Officials say Andrew Cheadle walked into the store wearing a backpack with an object sticking out of it. An employee noticed what appeared to be a rifle and called police.

Officers quickly arrived and surrounded the building, and made contact with Cheadle who was in the restroom. He was quickly detained.

The item was determined to be the wooden stock of a crossbow. The weapon was dismantled into several pieces. Cheadle was also found to have narcotics in his possession.

Cheadle was booked on weapons and drug charges. Although authorities say he did not appear to have a threatening intent, he should not have had the weapon with him in the store.

No injuries were reported.
