MODESTO – A driver was arrested on various charges related to a crash that claimed the life of a 12 year old girl Sunday evening.

Police say the crash happened at about 7:00pm near the intersection of Sisk Road and Plaza Parkway, and involved a Jeep Laredo and Nissan Altima.

Officials say the driver of the Jeep, identified as 45 year old Kelley Ball, ran the red light in a northbound direction on Sisk Road and collided with the Nissan Altima. Ball exited the vehicle and fled on foot into the nearby WalMart where she attempted to take a face mask and pair of shoes from the store. She was taken into custody by police.

A 12 year old girl in the Nissan died as a result of the broadside collision. Her 15 year old brother suffered major injuries and was flown by air ambulance to a Bay Area hospital. The mother of the children sustained minor injuries, and the father was taken to a hospital in serious condition.

Ball was charged with murder, gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated, felony DUI, felony hit and run, and vandalism. Authorities say she had prior DUI convictions.

Police warn that driving under the influence means more than just alcohol. Drug intoxication and prescription medication use is also against the law and can bring serious consequences, authorities say.

Police are asking anyone who may have witnessed Ball’s Jeep Laredo driving erratically in the area before the crashed to contact raduechelr@modestopd.com or Crime Stoppers at (209) 521-4636 where callers can remain anonymous.
